History/Overview
The Subaru Crosstrek PHEV is a new addition to the compact crossover’s lineup for 2020. It adds a plug-in hybrid drive system that allows some electric-only driving range.
Available Trims
Subaru offers the Crosstrek PHEV in a single Limited trim level, the top spec offered in the regular Crosstrek that’s covered in its own buyer’s guide entry. It mates its electric drive with a 2.0L four-cylinder gas engine, a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive.
Standard Features
Crosstrek PHEV’s exterior features include 18-inch wheels and tires, steering-responsive auto on/off LED headlights and LED fog lights, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, a front wiper de-icer, and passive keyless entry.
Subaru equips the cabin with a sunroof, an 8.0-inch infotainment display with navigation, eight-speaker audio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, heated front seats, a six-way power driver’s seat, push-button engine start, leather-trimmed shifter and steering wheel, and leather seating.
The EyeSight driver assist package is included, which bundles forward collision detection with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. Also standard are automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.
Fuel Economy
Subaru’s fuel consumption estimates for the Crosstrek PHEV are 6.6/6.8 L/100 km (city/highway) when running as a gas-electric hybrid, and 2.6 Le/100 km with a full charge of its electric drive battery.
Competition
The Subaru Crosstrek is one of many subcompact crossovers available today, but the competitive field shrinks significantly when you consider its plug-in technology. The larger Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the closest direct competitor. You could cross-shop the Crosstrek PHEV with the Kia Niro PHEV, but it’s more of a wagon and doesn’t offer AWD.
To find more plug-in crossovers, you have to look to fully electric models like the Hyundai Kona EV, or more expensive upscale vehicles such as Volvo’s XC60 T8.
